Hello Mr Merchant, Ian if I may.

You’ll be unaware, but you’re presently in Cornwall on holiday with myself and my wife, at least your predecessor Thom is.

I selected one or two books from Waterstones in Horsham to bring with me, including One Fine Day but only on the strength of a quick read of the back cover, which gave little locational clue other than Sussex.

Only on opening it once down here did I discover the Hurst connection, a village in which I lived for some fifteen years, before relocating five miles west to Wineham where we remain.

During our time in Hurst I like Thom, was Churchwarden, but of the 1846 built Holy Trinity church, not the Saxon St Lawrence that he would have known.

I have found your book a fantastic read and once home I shall read it again at a more leisurely pace. You’ve very cleverly woven a much wider range of stories, along with your own underlying thoughts around a lead that you’ve taken from Thom. Well done and thank you.

I hope the medics are keeping you comfortable and with dignity.

    Regards

    Alan

Loving your book ‘One Fine Day’ Ian. Ali Kedge sent it over as I was particularly poorly with covid.
I’m not a great history loving person but this gripped me.
